
During March and April, I made photo outings to several well-known birding destinations in the Texas Gulf Coast area; Shoveler's Pond in the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge, Smith Oaks Sanctuary at High Island, Texas, Bolivar Flats Sanctuary, and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Some of my outings were made with my local Kingwood Photo Club, others were solo trips or attendance at the annual Galveston Feather Fest workshops.
Not every outing produced a standout image, but all provided great opportunities to view birds in protected habitats, study their behavior, and continue to improve my bird photography skills. I am relatively new to bird photography, and still learning the elements of a quality bird photograph. One skill that is definitely required is understanding how your camera autofocus system works, and practice using it. All of my photos showed progress as the spring proceeded.
